Night and winter helicopter flying in the UK

Winter does not stop helicopter charter, but it changes the planning. Days are short, landing sites need to be usable in the dark and the weather is less forgiving. This guide explains what to expect and how to make a winter flight work.

In short

Helicopters fly in winter and at night in the UK, but daylight is short, landing sites must be suitable and lit for dark arrivals, and the pilot and aircraft must be approved for it. Plan earlier departures, build in margin for fog and cloud and tell us your latest acceptable arrival time.

Key points

  • Daylight is the main constraint in winter. In southern England the sun sets just before 4pm around the shortest day, and earlier still in the north of Scotland.
  • Night flights are possible when the pilot, aircraft and landing site are all suitable. Many private sites are not lit and are daylight only.
  • Airfields and heliports with lighting and air traffic services are the usual choices for dark arrivals and departures.
  • Fog, low cloud and ice are the winter hazards, not cold itself.
  • If the flight is cancelled because of the weather, you pay nothing.

Can helicopters fly at night in the UK?

Yes, helicopters fly at night in the UK, but it needs three things to line up: a pilot trained and approved for night flying, an aircraft equipped for it and a landing site suitable for the dark. On a charter, the second and third are the ones that usually limit what you can do.

A licensed airfield or a lit heliport is straightforward. A field at a country house may not be. Even where the pilot is willing, a landing area without lighting, clear markings and a known obstacle environment is not suitable at night. We check each site before we quote, and if the site is daylight only, we plan the schedule so that the helicopter leaves and arrives while there is light.

That matters for events. A day out that ends after dark may need the return to depart from an airfield rather than from the hospitality site. Our guide to landing at a private site explains what a site needs.

How short are the winter days?

In the south of England around the shortest day, sunset is shortly before 4pm. Further north the day is shorter again, and in the north of Scotland the sun sets noticeably earlier than that. Published sunrise and sunset tables give exact times for any location and date, and we check them for your route.

Practically, it means a winter schedule has a window. A 09:00 departure and a 15:00 return fits in daylight for most of the UK. A 17:00 return from a field does not. When you give us your preferred times, tell us which are fixed. If a late finish is unavoidable, we suggest alternatives such as returning from an airfield or using a car for the last leg, and our sister service Executive Global Travel can arrange it.

What is different about winter flying?

Cold air is dense and helps engine performance, so cold alone is not a problem. The things that change are visibility, cloud and surface conditions. Fog and low stratus are common on still winter mornings, and often burn off by late morning. Ice can form on the airframe in freezing cloud. Frost and snow on the ground change what the pilot sees at a landing site, and snow can make the surface hard to judge.

Aircraft are prepared accordingly: pre-flight checks include removing frost, and the pilot applies stricter limits when conditions are poor. The winter pattern is that flights go, but you may leave a little later or earlier than planned. Our guide to weather and helicopter charter goes through each hazard, and the exact wording stays the same all year: if the flight is cancelled because of the weather, you pay nothing.

Which sites work best in the dark?

Airfields and heliports with lighting, a known layout and often air traffic or flight information services work best for night operations. London's heliport on the Thames, a number of major general aviation airfields and some airports are used for this. Our directory of UK heliports and airfields shows the sites we use, and the page for each includes the information we hold on hours and permissions.

Private helipads are a mixed picture. Some hotels and estates have lit pads, which we check at booking. Others are grass and daylight only. Always ask: it is a normal question and we expect it.

What do winter clients most often ask?

Night and winter helicopter flying raises the same few questions. Will the flight still go in December? Usually yes, on the many days with workable weather, though fog and low cloud make winter schedules less predictable than summer ones. Can we fly home after a dinner? Only from a lit site with a suitable aircraft and crew; otherwise a car completes the journey. Is it colder in the cabin? The cabin is heated, but the walk to the aircraft is exposed, so wear a coat.

Winter also brings the busiest corporate calendar of the year, with client events and year-end meetings, so helicopters and landing slots go early. Book as soon as the date is known. For wider planning, see roadshow and multi-stop day planning.

How should I plan a winter or evening flight?

  • Start earlier than you would in summer, and treat the morning as the safe window.
  • Give us your latest acceptable arrival, not just your preferred one.
  • Agree a fallback by car for the last leg, in case fog or cloud closes in.
  • Check what the site has: lights, a flat surface, a road for the car, and a shelter if you have to wait.
  • Dress for the walk: landing areas can be exposed and cold.

For corporate events, the autumn and winter calendar is busy, and our events calendar article looks ahead. When you are ready, request a quote and tell us your times.

Frequently asked questions

Can a helicopter land in the dark?

Yes, where the pilot is approved, the aircraft is equipped and the site is suitable and lit. Many private sites are daylight only.

What time does it get dark for winter flights?

In southern England around the shortest day, sunset is just before 4pm, and earlier in the north. We check sunset tables for your route.

Is it harder to fly a helicopter in cold weather?

Cold on its own is not a problem. Fog, low cloud, icing and snow on the surface are the hazards.

Can I return after dark from a country house?

Only if the landing site is suitable for night use. Otherwise we plan the return from a lit airfield or use a car for the last leg.

What if fog delays the flight?

Winter fog often lifts by late morning. We can delay the departure, change the site or arrange a car. If the flight is cancelled because of the weather, you pay nothing.

Is a twin-engine helicopter better for night flying?

For many night and over-water or city operations, two engines add margin and are the norm. Every aircraft in our fleet is twin-engine.
