Where can you charter a helicopter in Wales?

Wales has a handful of sites, each with a clear role. Prior permission applies at each.

  • Cardiff Heliport is the dedicated city heliport in Cardiff Bay, about two miles from the centre, with a lounge, VIP lounge and conference room. It is open 09:00 to 18:00 daily (09:00 to 17:00 in winter), closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. It is not a designated customs port, so international flights need paperwork filed in advance.
  • Cardiff Airport at Rhoose is open 24 hours with customs and immigration on site, no night curfew, and handling mandatory for aircraft over 2 tonnes.
  • Swansea Airport is published as open, but its aerodrome licence has been temporarily suspended since 25 August 2026, so public-transport flights cannot currently be accepted. We confirm status before quoting and never promise a Swansea landing. Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire is the covered alternative in the west, open 08:30 to 17:00.
  • Hawarden Airport in Flintshire serves North Wales, Chester and Cheshire with a 2,093 m runway and a business aviation terminal.

Other Welsh airfields, including Welshpool in Powys and Caernarfon in Gwynedd, appear in the UK heliports and airfields directory.

How much time does a helicopter save in Wales?

South Wales to England is the strongest case. The figures are from our route data; road times are free-flowing, so real journeys are slower.

  • Cardiff Heliport to Bristol takes about 15 minutes by helicopter, against about 1 hour 10 minutes by road.
  • Cardiff Heliport to Cheltenham takes about 25 to 35 minutes, against about 1 hour 28 minutes.
  • Cardiff Heliport to Birmingham takes about 40 to 50 minutes, against about 2 hours 20 minutes.
  • Cardiff Heliport to London (Battersea) takes about 50 to 65 minutes, against about 3 hours 3 minutes.
  • Hawarden to Liverpool takes about 10 to 15 minutes, against about 49 minutes.
  • Hawarden to Manchester takes about 20 to 25 minutes, against about 1 hour 10 minutes.

Our journey times article explains the method.

What do people in Wales fly for?

Cardiff is the capital and the centre of government, media and professional services, and Cardiff Bay puts a helipad close to the offices. The Cardiff to Bristol, Birmingham and London links are the core. In the north, the Airbus wing plant at Broughton generates aerospace business at Hawarden. See business helicopter charter for how a day is planned.

Events cross the border: Cheltenham is about 25 to 35 minutes from Cardiff Heliport, and horse racing by helicopter sets out how race-day landings work. Rural Wales has a number of shooting estates; read shooting by helicopter for how guns are carried and why weights matter.

Because many Welsh roads are slow, and the terrain limits landing sites, a planned flight can be a sound option for secure transport; see secure helicopter transport.

Welsh city pages and neighbours

Pages for Wales are Cardiff, Swansea and, for the north, Chester. Bristol is just across the Severn, covered in South West England; the Midlands and Birmingham are in the Midlands; and the north-east corner connects to North West England. See helicopter charter UK for the national guide.

Planning a flight in Wales

The big planning points are Swansea's status, Cardiff Heliport's daytime hours, and the weather in the hills. If a return needs to be late, Cardiff Airport is the 24-hour choice. If the flight is cancelled because of the weather, you pay nothing. Landing at private sites such as estates and hotels is subject to landing permission and site suitability. In short, helicopter charter wales is strongest between Cardiff Bay and the English cities across the Severn.

More places, events and routes in Wales

North Wales, Mid Wales and Pembrokeshire each have a city page. Principality Stadium has an event page for match days in Cardiff, and the route pages include London to Cardiff, Bristol to Cardiff and Birmingham to Cardiff.
