The short answer

Northern England has dedicated heliports at Manchester Barton and Leeds, 24-hour airports at Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle, regional airfields at Blackpool, Carlisle, Humberside and Teesside, and the Aintree race-day helipad. Most need PPR, and several require handling or customs notice, which we arrange.

Which sites in the North are purpose-built for helicopters?

Among the heliports and airfields in northern England, two do the main work. Manchester Heliport at Barton Aerodrome is five miles west of the city with a proper departure lounge. Flying operations run Monday to Thursday 09:00 to 18:00 and Friday to Sunday 09:00 to 19:00 or sunset if earlier (library check, 29 September 2026); every landing is PPR, and customs need four hours notice inbound and 24 hours outbound. See helicopter charter to Manchester.

Leeds Heliport at Coney Park lies half a mile north of Leeds Bradford Airport and inside its controlled airspace. It is available seven days a week by PPR, and it is a basic waiting area rather than a full terminal. A warning for ground transport: satellite navigation can lead a car into the Coney Park estate, so we give the driver exact directions. See Leeds.

Named examples across the North

  • Manchester Airport: slot-coordinated, with two 3,050 m runways, two business aviation terminals and a mandatory handling agent, which we book.
  • Liverpool John Lennon Airport: a 2,286 m runway and 24-hour customs; PPR and ground handling are mandatory for visiting aircraft. See Liverpool.
  • Aintree Racecourse Helipad: operates on race days only, for the Grand National Festival in April, with escorted access into the racecourse; see Aintree by helicopter.
  • Blackpool Airport: open 07:00 to 20:00, PPR for all flights, with handling mandatory for heavier aircraft and those arriving from abroad. See Blackpool.
  • Carlisle Lake District Airport: open 09:00 to 17:00 daily; currently unlicensed with air/ground radio only, realistic for helicopters and aircraft under 5.7 tonnes. See Carlisle.
  • Leeds Bradford Airport: open 07:00 to 23:00, PPR outside those hours, with business aviation handled on the south side away from the passenger terminal.
  • Leeds East Airport (Church Fenton): a privately owned licensed aerodrome open 08:00 to 18:00 seven days, PPR through an online portal; useful for York. See York.
  • Humberside Airport: 2,200 m runway; open roughly 06:20 to 21:15 with PPR outside those hours; hire-and-reward flights must use an approved handling agent. See Hull.
  • Sandtoft Airfield: near Doncaster, an unlicensed airfield on weekdays; licensing for public-transport flights is confirmed before any booking.
  • Newcastle International Airport: open 24 hours with customs on site, PPR for all aircraft and an executive jet centre. See Newcastle.
  • Teesside International Airport: open 06:00 to 22:00 with no slots and a dedicated Jet Centre; popular for grouse and pheasant seasons. See Teesside.

Race days, shoots and the northern seasons

The North has a strong event calendar, and the landing arrangements follow it. Aintree runs for the Grand National meeting only, and shooting estates across the North often combine an airfield such as Teesside or Carlisle with a private landing site. Dates change, so check with the organiser. See York races by helicopter, the St Leger at Doncaster and shooting by helicopter.

Customs, handling and PPR in the North

The larger airports carry on-site customs, while Blackpool, Carlisle, Humberside, Leeds East and Teesside generally need arrangement and notice. Where handling is compulsory, such as Blackpool for heavier aircraft or Humberside for hire-and-reward flights, the agent is booked as part of the flight and you do not need to deal with them directly. Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle make PPR mandatory for visitors. Barton and Leeds heliports are PPR for every landing. We apply and hold the confirmations.

How do I choose between them?

Match the site to the end of the trip, not the middle. For Manchester city centre, Barton heliport is typically the closest, with the airport useful for connections to jets. For Leeds, the heliport saves time on the ground; Leeds East is the one for York. In Merseyside, the airport suits the city and Aintree suits race days. On the North East coast, Newcastle is the main option with Teesside to the south. Look at the routes: Manchester to Edinburgh, Leeds to Newcastle and London to Leeds show the typical time savings. Regional pages: North West, North East and Yorkshire and the Humber. Back to the main directory.

Manchester Heliport at Barton Aerodrome, five miles west of the city, or Manchester Airport for connections. Every landing at Barton is PPR.

Yes, a race-day helipad for the Grand National meeting in April, with escorted access into the course. It is not available on non-race days.

Does Leeds have a heliport?

Yes, Leeds Heliport at Coney Park near Leeds Bradford Airport, available by PPR seven days a week. It is a basic waiting area.

Which northern airports are open 24 hours?
