Leeds to newcastle by helicopter takes about 35 to 45 minutes, against at least 2 hours 21 minutes on the road.
The flight from Leeds Bradford Airport to Newcastle International is about 35 to 45 minutes. Leeds East, at Church Fenton, is a little further from Newcastle and takes the same 35 to 45 minutes; the road from it is slightly longer at 2 hours 25 minutes.

Three ways to leave Leeds
Leeds has more site choice than most cities. Leeds Bradford Airport has a 2,250 metre runway and a full business aviation service. It is the highest of the major UK airports, at around 674 feet, so cloud is more likely to sit on the airfield than at lower sites. Leeds Heliport at Coney Park is half a mile north, inside the airport's controlled airspace, strictly prior-permission-required, with a basic waiting area and free parking. Leeds East is to the east, near York, and is privately owned with prior permission for every movement.
If you are coming from York itself, see helicopter charter York, which uses Leeds East.
In Newcastle, Newcastle International Airport has a 2,330 metre runway and customs on site around the clock. Prior permission and handling are required, and we book both for you.
The flight itself
The track runs north-east past the Vale of York and the Tees valley, then over County Durham to the Tyne. Teesside Airport lies not far from the line; if your destination is on Teesside or the Durham coast, helicopter charter Teesside may be a better landing point than Newcastle. As with any northern route, low cloud and winter daylight shape the timing more than distance does, so we check forecast and sunset together.
Who flies between Leeds and Newcastle
Mostly business, and mostly regional. A firm with offices in both cities, a regional bank, or a contractor with sites in Yorkshire and the North East will find that a single flight replaces a half day on the A1. Our page on same-day business trips explains the planning. The flight is also useful as one leg in a longer chain, for example London to Leeds, then Newcastle, then Edinburgh.
For guests going to a race meeting, York Racecourse is within easy reach of the Leeds sites.

A same-day plan
- Leave Leeds Heliport at 08:00, land at Newcastle between 08:35 and 08:45.
- Meetings and lunch.
- Leave Newcastle at 15:00, land at Leeds between 15:35 and 15:45.
That is 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes in the air. The same trip by car is at least 4 hours 42 minutes of driving, so the helicopter typically gives back about 3 hours 22 minutes.
What the road time does not count
The 2 hours 21 minutes assumes no traffic and no stop. Roadworks and incidents on the main northern routes are common, and parking in the centre of either city is on top. The helicopter has overheads too: arrive 10 minutes before departure, supply weights, and arrange a car from the airport. A chauffeur can meet you at either end.
How we work out the times
For Leeds to Newcastle the straight-line distance is 70.4 nautical miles (81 statute miles). Flying that at a cruise of 135 knots takes about 31 minutes; we add 8 minutes for start-up, climb and the approach, which gives a block time of about 39 minutes. We then show it as a range, 10 per cent shorter to 12 per cent longer, rounded to the nearest five minutes: 35 to 45 minutes. The road figure of 2 hours 21 minutes (103 miles) is the free-flowing time from a routing engine, so it is a floor. Real journeys on the day are usually slower.
The other northern routes are covered on the UK helicopter routes page. Regional detail: Yorkshire and the Humber and North East England. Our article on helicopter against car journey times explains the comparison.
Flying the other way
The figures are the same in both directions: Newcastle to Leeds is 70 nm in a straight line and 35 to 45 minutes by helicopter. The car takes at least 2 hours 21 minutes (103 miles).
