The short answer

Southern England has central London heliports, busy business airports such as Farnborough and Biggin Hill, small helicopter-friendly airfields, racecourse helipads and Cornish gateways to the Isles of Scilly. The right one depends on your destination, the hours and permission required, and whether the site handles your aircraft type.

Want a price for this? Tell us where and when; we reply with options and a price for the whole aircraft.

Which London heliports can I use?

Among the heliports and airfields in southern England, central London has one licensed heliport: the London Heliport on the Thames at Battersea, with permitted hours of 07:00 to 23:00 seven days and core hours of 07:30 to 19:30 on weekdays and 08:00 to 18:00 at weekends (library check, 29 September 2026). It is the default arrival point for business travellers going into the West End, and flights from it are covered on our sister site Battersea Helicopter. We summarise the options on helicopter charter from Battersea.

To the east, the Skyports London Heliport on the Isle of Dogs is the closest to Canary Wharf, the City, ExCeL and the O2. It operates on weekdays from 08:00 to 19:00 with at least four hours notice, and weekends by arrangement with 24 hours notice. Some helicopter types are restricted there. See helicopter charter to London City and Docklands.

Where do business jets and helicopters meet?

Biggin Hill, Farnborough, Northolt, Oxford and Southend are all business aviation airports that welcome jets as well as helicopters. They are the sites to consider when a helicopter leg links to a private jet. See our jet charter site for the jet side. By contrast Heathrow and Gatwick are slot-coordinated, so we normally route private London flights through other airports. Details of Heathrow and Gatwick explain what is possible.

What about Hampshire, Dorset and the Solent?

Southampton Airport is open Monday to Saturday from 06:30 to 22:00 and Sundays from 07:30 to 22:00, with a handling agent compulsory for every flight; see Southampton. Nearby Solent Airport at Daedalus is a 1,176 m airfield open 09:00 to 18:00 with a Border Force agreement for EU and Channel Islands flights. Bournemouth Airport runs from 06:15 to 01:00 and needs PPR for every aircraft; see Bournemouth. On the Isle of Wight, Bembridge is unlicensed with no fuel and a radio service only at weekends and bank holidays, so it needs checking well ahead: see Isle of Wight. Blackbushe in Hampshire has its own page, Blackbushe, and we confirm details with the airport itself.

And the South West, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly?

The Cotswolds have Gloucestershire Airport at Staverton, a jet-capable airfield with a 1,432 m runway and PPR; Cotswold Airport at Kemble, open Tuesday to Sunday 09:00 to 17:00; and the Cheltenham Racecourse Helipad, which operates on race and event days only. See the Cotswolds and Cheltenham. Exeter and Bristol are jet airports with handling; Newquay is Cornwall’s main jet-capable airport.

In Cornwall, Penzance Heliport is the mainland gateway to the Isles of Scilly. It is open Monday to Saturday, daylight VFR only, and closed on Sundays. On the islands, Tresco Heliport is a private estate site that is closed on Sundays, and St Mary’s Airport is also closed on Sundays and has no fuel. Land’s End Airport is closed on Sundays as well. See Penzance and the Isles of Scilly.

How do I choose between sites in this region?

Start with the destination. For the West End, Battersea; for Canary Wharf, the Isle of Dogs; for a country house in Surrey or Sussex, often Redhill or a private lawn; for a link to a private jet, Biggin Hill, Farnborough or Northolt. Then check the day: Sundays close several West Country sites, while winter dusk cuts hours at small airfields. Consider the ground leg and book a car where needed; chauffeured cars in London are arranged by our sister company. Finally, check the type: only a few of these sites suit a large helicopter. Our regional overview is on the South East England and South West England pages.

The London Heliport at Battersea, the only licensed heliport in central London. The Isle of Dogs heliport is the one for Canary Wharf and the City.

Can a helicopter land at Heathrow or Gatwick?

Which airfields in the south close on Sundays?

Penzance Heliport, Tresco Heliport, St Mary’s Airport and Land’s End Airport are closed on Sundays, based on published hours checked on 29 September 2026.

Is Goodwood open to helicopters?

Yes, as a licensed aerodrome with seasonal hours, and on event days it is the gateway to Goodwood events, with transport arranged. Event days need advance booking.

Can I land at Epsom or Ascot racecourse?

Both have helipads that run on race days, booked in advance. Ascot is also available on non-event days subject to permission.

Is the Northolt route open to everyone?

Civil flights are accepted at set hours with a PPR number issued the day before, and there is a limit on civilian passengers per aircraft. Northolt is a military station, so rules are strict.
