The short answer

Scotland has 24-hour airports at Edinburgh, Glasgow and Prestwick, a daytime airport at Aberdeen, small airfields at Perth, Dundee and Cumbernauld, and a network of Highlands and Islands airports with short hours and PPR. Distances are long, so a helicopter saves the most time here. We check hours and permission for your date.

Which airports serve Edinburgh and Glasgow?

Among the heliports and airfields in Scotland, Edinburgh and Glasgow are both open around the clock for customs, immigration, handling and fuel, according to the UK aeronautical information publication as recorded in our library on 29 September 2026. At Edinburgh a handling agent is mandatory for every flight including general aviation and helicopters, and every aircraft needs PPR with its handler; at Glasgow, all flights including general aviation need prior approval from the airport. We book both as part of the flight. See Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Between the two, Cumbernauld Airport offers a quieter alternative: a short 819 m runway, open 09:00 to 17:00, PPR by online form, phone or email. Prestwick is the third 24-hour option on the Ayrshire coast: a 2,987 m runway and compulsory handling. See Prestwick.

Named examples across Scotland

  • Aberdeen International Airport: airfield open 06:00 to 22:30 daily, PPR outside those hours; customs on site 07:00 to 23:00 with prior arrangement for non-scheduled flights; two business aviation handlers. See Aberdeen.
  • Dundee Airport: Monday to Friday 06:45 to 21:00 and shorter at weekends; light jets only; the closest airport to St Andrews, Carnoustie and Gleneagles according to our library. See Dundee.
  • Perth Airport (Scone): open 09:00 to 17:00; longest runway 853 m, so helicopters and small turboprops; PPR with the landing fee prepaid. See Perth.
  • Inverness Airport: airfield 06:15 to 22:45 daily; strictly PPR, two hours notice for domestic and 24 hours for international arrivals. See Inverness.
  • Wick John O’Groats Airport: terminal hours are short, but fuel, handling and customs are available at all hours by arrangement; Saturdays the terminal is closed.
  • Kirkwall Airport (Orkney): weekday 07:15 to 20:00, shorter on Saturday; PPR, and turboprops and helicopters are the natural fit.
  • Sumburgh Airport (Shetland): a public road crosses the runway undershoot and barriers close before each landing and departure; the airfield closes around 20:00 on weekdays.
  • Stornoway Airport (Lewis): a 2,088 m runway with ILS; the PPR form must be lodged at least three hours before arrival.
  • Benbecula Airport: PPR with three hours notice; weekend hours are very short and there is no published fuel.
  • Islay Airport: strictly PPR with three hours notice through the airport's online form; no Jet A-1 is listed, so jets plan to carry fuel.
  • Tiree Airport: no refuelling service on the island, and arrival and departure times may be allocated.
  • Campbeltown Airport: weekday daytime only, no fuel and no customs, so PPR times must match the hours.
  • Oban Airport: strictly PPR with a definite date and ETA; VFR only with basic fire cover.

Why does Scotland suit a helicopter so well?

Distances are large and roads wind through hills, so the saving over the road is among the biggest in the country. Newcastle to Edinburgh and Manchester to Edinburgh show typical times next to the road equivalent. Golf, estate visits and event travel are strong uses: see golf by helicopter.

What to know about island and Highland sites

The Highlands and Islands airports run on short, uneven hours: Sunday opening can be only a few hours, Saturday may be closed or half-day, and weekday evenings finish early. Fuel is not always available, customs is by arrangement and weather can close a site at short notice. Charter flights must fit published hours or have an extension agreed in advance. We plan with a fallback site wherever a route depends on one, and for any flight over the sea we use a twin-engine type, as explained on the fleet page. Hours are as published in our airport library, checked 29 September 2026, and are confirmed for your date.

How do I choose a site in Scotland?

For city meetings, use the big airports for their hours and customs and add a car at the other end. For golf and country estates, choose the nearest small airfield or a private site by agreement with the landowner, always subject to landing permission and site suitability. For the islands, pick the airfield with fuel and hours that fit, and always confirm the return. Regional context is on helicopter charter in Scotland, and the main directory explains PPR and customs.

Frequently asked questions

Which Scottish airports are open 24 hours?

Edinburgh, Glasgow and Prestwick, according to the published information in our library checked on 29 September 2026.

Which airport is nearest to St Andrews?

Dundee Airport is the closest, and Perth is another option for the Gleneagles side. We choose by hours and the road leg.

Do island airports have fuel?

Not always. Tiree has no refuelling service, Campbeltown has none and Benbecula publishes none. We plan fuel before we agree the flight.

What does PPR mean in Scotland?

Prior permission required, so the airport must agree to your flight before you land. Notice varies from two to three hours at some Highlands airports to a day for international arrivals.

Can a helicopter fly to Orkney or Shetland?

Yes, with a suitable twin-engine helicopter, fuel planning and weather. Airfield hours at Kirkwall and Sumburgh are limited.

Is Edinburgh good for helicopters?

Yes. The airport is open around the clock but a handling agent is mandatory, which we book for you.
