Travelling to UK sporting events by helicopter: a planning guide

Racing, motorsport, golf, rugby and football all draw crowds that clog the roads. A helicopter can bypass the worst of it, but each event has its own rules. Here is how to plan an arrival that works.

In short

To reach a UK sporting event by helicopter, you need a landing site that the organiser or venue allows, a timetable set around gates opening and the end of the event, and a ground plan for the last mile. Access varies by event, so we confirm it first and check dates with the organiser.

Want a price for this? Tell us where and when; we reply with options and a price for the whole aircraft.

Key points

  • Landing at an event depends on the organiser and venue. Some arrange helicopter areas, others do not allow arrivals at all.
  • Landing slots and sites at big events fill early. Ask as soon as you know the date.
  • Event dates change. We do not publish dates here; check with the organiser, and we plan from your confirmed date.
  • The ground side matters: a helicopter that lands near the course still needs a way to the gate.
  • Landing at any site is subject to permission and site suitability.

Which events can you reach by helicopter?

We cover a wide spread of UK sport. Horse racing is the biggest: see horse racing by helicopter, with pages for Ascot, Cheltenham, Epsom, Newmarket and York. Motorsport is next, with race circuits and Silverstone. There are also pages for golf, polo, football and rugby at Twickenham.

For Royal Ascot specifically, the Royal Ascot arrival guide on our flagship site goes into the detail. Stadium venues in cities, such as football grounds, rarely have a helicopter landing area of their own, so the usual plan is a nearby airfield and a car.

How long does it take to get there?

Our route figures show the pattern. London to Silverstone is about 25 to 35 minutes by helicopter, against around 1 hour 49 minutes by road in free-flowing conditions, and on a race weekend road times are far longer. Birmingham to Silverstone is about 20 to 25 minutes against 1 hour 17 minutes. London to Newmarket is about 30 to 35 minutes against 1 hour 44 minutes. Birmingham to Cheltenham is about 20 to 25 minutes against 1 hour 13 minutes, and Bristol to Cheltenham about 25 to 30 minutes against 1 hour 14 minutes.

From Manchester, York is about 30 to 35 minutes against 1 hour 54 minutes by road, and from Birmingham, Goodwood is about 50 to 60 minutes against 3 hours 8 minutes. These figures are block times and exclude your own journey to the departure point. Event-day traffic makes the road times worse, which is the point of the exercise.

How does landing work at an event?

Each event is different. Some racecourses and circuits run a managed helicopter area with allocated slots, and the organiser decides who may use it and when. Others have a nearby field or airfield. Some prohibit helicopter arrivals entirely.

We contact the organiser or venue, ask for a slot and confirm it. We then give you the arrival time, the point of arrival and the way to the gate. Landing at any site is subject to permission and site suitability. Our private site guide explains what we check.

What about the ground side?

The last mile can make or break the day. At a big event, a car or a shuttle may wait at the landing area, or you may walk. We find out what is available and arrange a chauffeur car where needed through Executive Global Travel. For the return, build in the end-of-event crowd: leave a little early or plan to wait.

Daylight also matters for late finishes in winter. A fixture that ends after dark may need a return from a lit airfield. See night and winter helicopter flying.

Which sporting events suit a helicopter best?

A helicopter to sporting events works best where the venue is outside a city and roads are the problem: racecourses, circuits and golf clubs. Racing days draw many thousands onto a few roads, and a helicopter bypasses them. Motorsport weekends at circuits are the classic example, with queues of traffic that a helicopter does not join. Golf tournaments in rural settings are similar.

Stadium sport is different. City football grounds and rugby stadiums rarely have a place to land, and city airspace is restricted, so the helicopter takes you to an airfield outside the city and a car does the rest. That can still beat a long drive, but the saving is smaller. We say so, rather than sell you a flight that does not help. For hospitality, many clients combine a flight in with a day at the event as a client gift. For the corporate angle, see helicopter charter for business.

If you are planning for a large group, read moving a large group by helicopter. If the flight is cancelled because of the weather, you pay nothing, and a chauffeur car is the fallback.

What if the weather is poor on the day?

Sport does not wait for the weather, and neither does the schedule. Fixtures can be postponed, and a helicopter can be held on the ground by low cloud even when the event goes ahead. Plan a car as a back-up for every leg, and agree the time at which you switch. If the flight is cancelled because of the weather, you pay nothing. The fallback then costs you only the car. Our weather guide explains how the call is made. Check also whether the event itself has weather rules, since a racecourse or circuit may restrict arrivals when conditions are poor.

When should I book?

As soon as you know the date and the event confirms it. Major events fill landing slots and helicopters months ahead, and we cannot invent capacity. For the shape of the 2027 season, see our events calendar article, and always check the date with the organiser.

When you are ready, request a quote with the event, the date, the party and your starting point. We confirm what is possible and quote the day in full.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take a helicopter to Silverstone?

Often, subject to the organiser's arrangements and slot availability. London to Silverstone is about 25 to 35 minutes by helicopter.

Can a helicopter land at a football stadium?

Rarely at the stadium itself. The usual plan is a nearby airfield and a car, which we arrange.

Do racecourses have helicopter landing areas?

Many do, run by the course or organiser with allocated slots. We request one for you.

When should I book a helicopter for a big event?

As early as you can, once the date is confirmed. Slots and aircraft fill first for the biggest events.

Do you list event dates?

No. Dates change, so please check with the organiser. We plan from your confirmed date.

What if the weather is bad on the day?

If the flight is cancelled because of the weather, you pay nothing, and we plan a car fallback.

Can I take guests?

Yes, up to the capacity of the helicopter, from five to eight seats depending on the aircraft.
